Windows 8, and the new UEFI protocol, could potentially makes duel booting a Windows computer with Linux a thing of the past. The Software Foundation states:

"if done wrong, this system would have to be called Restricted Boot, because it could make computers incapable of running anything but Windows"

A public statement is now available on the Foundation's website, urging all computer users to sign their name to support the free software ideals. The statement goes on recommending that users commit to neither purchasing nor recommending such locked - in systems.

Thousands of signatures have already been signed additional sources state.

Windows 8 is still a ways away, but I urge anyone who cares about FOSS to add their name.

The petition is here.
